Jasper, Texas, officers Ricky Grissom and Ryan Cunningham were caught on police station surveillance video, beating 25-year-old Keyarika Diggles, May, 5, 2013, after dragging her to jail for a traffic ticket without a warrant.
Do you remember James Byrd? He was the black man in Jasper, Texas, that was dragged by a pickup truck until his arm was ripped from his body and he was decapitated. The three white boys that offered him a ride that horrific night were Shawn Berry, Lawrence Russell Brewer and John William King; all of which have were sentenced to death with the exception of Berry, who was given a life sentence. Now, those memories of racial hatred in the town are being drudged up again.
According to the Huffington Post, the city of Jasper, Texas, is under fire again with the beating of 25-year-old Keyarika Diggles inside a police station. The surveillance cameras in the station caught the entire incident on tape where two officers, Ricky Grissom and Ryan Cunningham, are seen ramming her head into the front desk and dragging her by her leg into a cell after cuffing her and pulling on her arms.
She was trying to arrange her bail with her mother when Grissom walked in and ended her call abruptly. It appeared to set off an argument between the two that escalated. Cunningham then rushed in and slammed her head up against the main desk before placing her in handcuffs. The good thing is that justice was swift in this case as the Jasper City Council got rid of both officers with a unanimous vote on Monday.
The council has also decided to get the city’s district attorney to consider criminal charges against the officers.
